Human Rights Celebration Concert

Human Rights Day in South Africa is historically linked with 21 March 1960, and the events of Sharpeville. On that day 69 people died and 180 were wounded when police fired on a peaceful crowd that had gathered in protest against the Pass laws. This day marked an affirmation by ordinary people, rising in unison to proclaim their rights. Every year since South Africans remembers that day through various celebrations.

The fusing of vintage classical music with contemporary lifestyle aesthetics in a celebratory ambience marked by elegance and sophistication. The concert was a representation of the triumphant spirit of the South African people and this was embodied through song.

Design Concept
The thinking and approach was to use a woman in the main artwork. With black women being the most marginalised of the human race,
I thought it fitting to use a young black woman to represent Human rights. Through this concept and other symbols of freedom/Human Rights, I was able to infuse the musical aspect; being the artists and choir, and the symbolic; being the Fist, Bird and African Woman into an aesthetically pleasing design.
